Considerations When Buying a Used Motorcycle | Taverner Motorsports

          1. The quality of the bike

Guarantee that the motorcycle is in perfect shape and ready for an adventure. Check every single part of the motorcycle to avoid disappointment and poor performance.

● Overall look

When buying a used bike, look at its overall appearance. Look at the bike carefully and check all the tight spots. If the bike has any plastic fairing, check the tabs that connect them to the frame. If the motorcycle ever crashes, these connections will indicate it.

● Engine

The engine must be alright. You can't buy a motorcycle with a dead engine. Otherwise, the whole bike will be slow.

● Exhaust

Check the exhaust. The engine sends a lot of vibration to the exhaust system, leading to the exhaust shifting its initial position and failing to function. Hence ensure that it is properly mounted. Also, ensure that you carefully examine it for rust and corrosion. If there are leaks in the pipe, you will hear them once you start the bike.

● Clutch

Before buying the bike, check the clutch. The motorcycle should roll smoothly with minimal resistance when the clutch and first gear are engaged. However, if the clutch lever has no free paly before engaging, it shows that there is a high possibility it has excessive wear.

● Inspect the brakes, suspension and tyres

2. Paperwork

Always check the paperwork. Ensure the frame number on the bike is the same as the one on the title. This also applies to the engine number. The numbers on the motorcycle have to match with the numbers on the paper, including addresses. If the paperwork doesn't align, walk away.

3. Price

How much does the bike cost? Is it within your budget? If not, you can consider purchasing a different brand.

4. Service history

Check the service history of the bike. Some sellers may not have evidence to show for the service of the motorcycle. However, make sure you ask about it.

5. Repairs

When buying used bikes from a dealership, the dealership has a service department that does all the repairs to the bike should an issue arise after you buy the bike. However, a private seller may have done the repairs and service before you buy the bike.

Therefore, ensure that all the repairs have been done as agreed when you buy a motorcycle. If you agree that the bike should come with no repairs, ensure it is well fixed.
